Supporting Vertical Access Hire Fleets
Watts Wheels & Tyres has successfully brought over 6 months’ preparatory work to conclusion with the launch of its range of 14 wheels for the powered vertical access machines available to collaborating clients within 24 hours, when ordered before 2pm for delivery in mainland UK. The powered access market covers machines like cherry-pickers, scissor lifts and low level access platforms used internally and externally.
As a well-established supplier of polyurethane wheels for forklifts and other handling equipment, Watts identified the need to reduce the costs of waste recycling, once an original tyre has become worn for our clients. Previously all owners of vertical access equipment would need to dispose of complete wheels, although there was typically nothing wrong with the centres because the costs of stripping the tyre outweighed the scrap value of the metal centre.
Watts combines the reduction of waste costs with the natural advantages that polyurethane has over rubber for the re-covering of access wheels. These include:
- higher abrasion resistance giving a longer life
- higher load bearing
- higher ozone resistance which reduces the likelihood of cracking
- better cut and tear resistance to reduce health and safety issues such as stability
The third need that Watts sought to address was that typically owners of hire fleets need to be able to refurbish their machines quickly in order to recoup their investment by enabling them to be on hire again where they were damaged or needed planned maintenance. This was a significant logistical problem resolved through understanding the individual needs of each customer to develop systems that fitted both parties’ needs.
The fourteen most common wheels have been selected for the initial programme, which cover Skyjack, JLG, Genie and Haulotte machines. Link Making these refurbished wheel centres ready for use within 24 hours for customers enrolled on the programme.
CEO of Watts Urethane Anthony Cooper commented “It is very rewarding to see the hard work of the Wheels and Tyres team paying off with the launch of this range of products for an area where Watts have been a stronger supplier. It demonstrates that through working closely with customers, we are able to develop solutions which not only cost-efficient for those clients with timely delivery of the finished product, but which also benefit the environment. We look forward to working more vertical access companies.”
