Protecting Construction Piles and Agricultural Posts
Hammer pads are used in construction piling and in the erection of wooden posts to protect the hammer and the item being struck. As with all our Industrial Parts products, they are continuously being improved.
Piling Hammer Pads
Watts Urethane Products has provided cast polyurethane hammer cushions to the piling industry for 20 years. The type of piling operation is heavily driven by geology. The UK possesses a North- South divide between two major types of piling: pile driven and helical. The North tends to have harder more impermeable rocks on which a pile might stand: the South softer and looser soils where a friction pile is more likely to be used.
Drop hammer piling applies extreme forces to the drop hammer and the pile itself. Cushioning is needed to prevent the destruction of the pile and damage to the driver. For example, the retaining bolts get distorted over time with the constant high energy impact between metal.
Hammer cushions , also known as anvil covers and hammer cushion pads act as a cushion between the drop hammer and the piling to absorb the force of impact. This reduces the need for hammer replacement and increases the success rate for driven piles. The reduction of noise from the impact is an additional benefit. This enables drop hammers to be used in urban areas, comply with Considerate Contractors and health and safety.
Roger Bullivant Trials
Leading foundation engineering company Roger Bullivant approached Watts Technical Solutions Department in late 2014 with the intention of re-designing their existing hammer pad through geometric and material changes. Their target was to improve on 4 key areas:
- Efficiency of drive
- Level of noise
Through extensive consultation between the two companies, we came up with a new design of hammer pad and a new choice of material, which Roger Bullivant have been and are still currently trialing. “This new design and material is showing a significant benefit in terms of the fitting. From the early results of preliminary trials, we believe that we will generate improvements in longevity and the new polyurethane material should generate a more efficient drive due to its inherent properties. “
Agricultural Post Caps
Many of the same performance considerations apply to Watts agricultural and horticultural post caps.
PU post caps are used when erecting posts either as fencing or as supports. Post splitting and straight driving are key issues when the agricultural post driver’s 100-400kg hammer impacts on, typically, wooden fence posts. Through the use of specific cast urethane pads to match the design of the post driver, either manual or powered, these issues can be overcome.
